  • L.L. Bean Review

I know ll beans returns policy has changed. I bought winter boots about 8 years ago and used about 50 times and kept in closet of home. Went out to snowblower and no blemishes or sole wear. They completely fell apart sole from boot with cracks. I went to ll bean today to ask for an exchange due to the poor craftsmanship. The salesperson at the Colonie store asked if I had a receipt I did not then spent 10 minutes on the computer not saying a word. Then asked multiple times if I purchased the boots which I did. I have been shopping at llbean since the early 2000"s but only a member since 2023 per computer but I think that was just for cc card. She then said since no receipt or proof of purchase they could not do anything. Suffice it to say they lost another customer. No pic because I left the worthless boots at the store. Order was placed Dec. 6th it is now the 18th and shipment has not arrived yet. CS cannot help me as they say UPS has forwarded the shipment to USPS. I wouldn't care if LL Bean paid for shipping, but they don't.This is why I stopped buying from them. I thought I would give them another try. Nope won't do that again.. I purchased 2 pants that were labelled 36x34. The changing rooms were too busy to wait and use. I am very consistent in this sizing from all other retail stores. When I tried the pants on while on a business trip and they did not fit. I have exceeded the 30 day return period and cannot return them. Tip for consumers:I (and family and friends) do not plan to go back to LL Bean following over 50 years as a customer. Placed an order for a backpack, which was supposedly in stock, but after I submitted the order, the status was changed to backordered. Called customer service (rep's name was Susan), who was extremely rude and practically shouting at me over the phone. Said she's been there 16 years but still couldn't give me a straight answer regarding the order status, and was talking to me like I was the dumb one. If you ever order from their website and need to talk to customer service, just know that you will be shouted at, interrupted, and talked down to for something that is their mistake. I have never encountered such incompetent, arrogant, impatient, and rude customer service anywhere in my entire life. However, one thing is for sure: I'll never shop there again after such a miserable experience. Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: November 28, 2024
I received my order 10/14/2024. It had 2 pair of M pants I didn't order (I wear XL) & was missing 2 pair of socks I had ordered, Called & the rep said replacements were on the way. She called me back to let me know they had noticed the error on their end & was already in process - socks should arrive 10/16. Nothing came 10/16, so reached out via chat. The 1st rep kept insisting there was a picture of the delivery, so I was out of luck (was the initial order, it was there, but incorrect). Finally she found the previous notes & attempted to fix it, but only was replacing 1 pair, not 2. A 2nd chat rep was flailing through fixing that, when someone called from LL Bean because I had given very negative survey responses. That person finally said both replacements are coming. This was beyond awful. I was a good & loyal customer, I deserved better. They don't care about their customers, so I won't be considering them anymore. I returned the pants, but still nothing on the socks. Tip for consumers:I don't even want to wear existing items I have from LL Bean after they lied to me & are screwing me Products used:All of them, but never received the socks Service Shipping Returns Date of experience: October 17, 2024
The elbow sleeve boat neck tee shirt that I ordered shrank two and a half inches in length when I washed it the first time. Since then it's shrunk another half inch. And, yes, I followed the laundry instructions on the tag. I have event tee shirts for which I've paid as little as $5 which have held up for years! It's deeply disappointing. I want to support an American company, but this shirt goes to Goodwill tomorrow. Products used:Women's cotton elbow tee shirt Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: August 8, 2024
LL Bean was once a pleasure to work with - but more recently exhibit haughtiness and unwillingness to answer simple questions in a courteous way. My husband was recently treated to this "holier-than thou" crap as he Father's Day shopped and was less than impressed with the idea of ever talking to their rude reps. Again. There are many finer purveyors of clothing around who offer excellent customer service. Get off the high horse, LL. You're not all that! Unshrinkable Tees have been changed to a thinner material, causing the comfort and look to look cheap. The collars now have a "fried bacon" look and the shirts are less comfortable. I guarantee whoever made this decision did not wear the original quality tees. Once set above, now not so much as I'm discovering their new standards aren't much different from other clothiers. Their boot they so highly praise blew stitching 2 years in. Customer service was the worst from any company I have ever dealt with totally brutal. They wanted me to ship it to the US and pay for th restitch after two years of normal use and then fought back and forth between Maine and store as to whose fault / responsibility it was. Please if you value quality and customer service you are better off somewhere else...anywhere... Date of experience: November 7, 2023
Quality is absolute trash! Nothing like original L.L. Bean. I don't know what they are trying to pull here! Sent back moccasins, Advertised as suede! What I received was not at all sued, looked like a pair of five dollar slippers! Sent back in the original packaging never even tried them on they were absolute trash! Then they tried to send me back a gift card to L.L. Bean! Scam of a company! This is not original LL Bean Date of experience: January 3, 2024
Bought robe online. Was delivered ok. Too big so drove 1/2 each way to return to store for a medium size. Simple exchange right? So clerk returned my large robe and put the money on a LL Bean card and used that to order me a medium sized robe, telling me it would be delivered to my home. When I went home LL Bean had canceled my order telling me it was out of stock. I immediately called LL Bean and they told me it was out of stock. Which the clerk should have told me to begin with. So she said they have a new shipment coming in so try back later and see if you can order it. I said well what about my money since the clerk never handed me the LL Bean card he put my money on. Oh it will be sent out by check but it will take awhile. I called back a couple days later to be told they are sending me a check for what I paid. So return for a different size was all I wanted to do. Instead they have lost a sale and a customer. It will be a very very long time before I buy from them again. I have returned two pair of boots because their sizing is all messed up. The web site recommends you size up so I did. I wear a 10.5 boot so I ordered an 11. They were way too big, more like a 13/14, so I returned them for a 10. When I received this boot it was still too big and felt more like an 11/12. So, once again I returned them and exchanged them for a size 9 (still waiting on this pair, as shipping takes 10/12 days). Both times they charged me $6.50 for shipping and then charged me full price for the exchange pair. I would have no problem with this policy, if the issue was my problem. I guess this will just have to be the last time I shop at LLBean. Products used:Duck boots Shipping Returns Date of experience: November 6, 2023
I had 2 gifts cards given to me. I can't use them for online orders and the items I want aren't available to be ordered through our Kitchener Ontario store. Not acceptable! If you sell gift cards, you should be able to use them! Service Date of experience: November 21, 2023
Items that used to be high quality are now more like Walmart goods. The costly sheets I ordered, after less than half a year, resemble ones in my closet that are 25 years old. The return of said sheets has taken over a month so far. My money is tied up until the long-awaited refund comes through. It is indeed an unnecessary long wait. After all, when you purchase, they take your money IMMEDIATELY. Very poor service when it takes over a month to get that money back due to a faulty product. Tip for consumers:look for another high end place. LLBean is no longer a high quality place Products used:sheets for only a few months Service Value Returns Quality Date of experience: January 19, 2023
I just bought 2 polartec "blankets" from these folks and they don't even compare to the ones I've ordered from them in the past. They're thin and more like the micro fleece sheets that I order from Kohl's. They're also way too expensive-(over $160 for 2 thin "made in China" "blankets"). Also, I had to revise my review three times on their website before they would post it. I think most of the folks who gave this "blanket" an excellent review have never ordered one of the older versions. Last purchase from them. Value Shipping Quality Date of experience: May 8, 2022
I have been wearing primarily LL bean for decades, shirts, jeans, boots, coats, fleece vests etc. In the last few years they have changed their color pallet to remove any bright colors from the hurricane cloth shirts, chamois shirts and polos, replacing interesting colors like salmon, red, yellow and tan with drab dull colors and plaid. None of the clothes I used to buy are available in a color I want to wear. They also gutted their guarantee. Date of experience: November 14, 2021
I ordered a set of sheets from LL Bean. The item came in an unsealed bag. It was meant to be a gift so I wanted it to be right. I contacted customer service and they responded, essentially saying that they did not care whatsoever. The experience left such a sour taste in my mouth. I will spend my money elsewhere next time. I tried to post this on their website to help other potential buyers however LL Bean refused to post my review. Tip for consumers:I would have stayed away from this company had I known their complete lack of willingness to take ownership of the quality of their products and packaging and delivery. Bought this pants with cash at Old Orchard shopping mall in Skokie, IL. Brought it back when I revisited the city a year later. Everyone agreed the quality problem but I was told that the pants cannot be replaced because no record can be found in their system. No one cares that the product has their brand/label. It is no more a brand I trusted and would not buy again. Date of experience: January 1, 2019
I purchased shirts from LL Bean - dress shirts - and all of them developed a specific defect. A set of holes (little tears) appeared - regularly spaced around the collar. On six different shirts. In the same place. I sent pictures to customer service, asking whether there had been other reports of poor quality with these shirts. There was no meaningful response. After years of purchasing from LL Bean, I have now shifted to other companies. Value Date of experience: February 18, 2023
I purchased Waterproof 650 Down Gloves for cold-weather hiking. Some of the reviews said the gloves didn't keep hands warm, and I should have paid attention. These gloves are okay at 50 degrees but if the air temperature is any lower, my hands got very cold within about two minutes of being outside. I'm very disappointed and am returning the gloves. Tip for consumers:A lot of fuss and trouble just to post a review to keep other people from buying a product that is not as described, and therefore inadequate for the needs of anyone going outside in cold weather. Changes delivery date 3 times! Ordered July 26. Now they say sept. 5th "maybe"! What the hell? Why should anyone have to wait 5-6 weeks for their child's birthday gift? Of course when I ordered it was going to be delivered by Aug 2. Another shady as hell Republican owned company only concerned with THEIR pockets rather than those hard working customers who fill them! Tip for consumers:If you're not going to honor what your website says it be nice if you would just state the truth. Instead of screwing people over when it comes to their children's birthdays. Just got off a chat with LL Bean's customer service about some boots of theirs that are only five years old and are starting to fall apart and was told they "are not repairable." Great. Bean used to stand by their products, but apparently no more. So sad, another reputable company gone down the drain. Guess I'll have to find another brand... Recently bought a sweater online that offered free shipping to Canada and found the US price tag still attached. I got charged $310 (cdn) for a $169 (usd) product… essentially overcharged by $50 after exchange and tax. I won't be buying again fro LL Bean. Date of experience: September 20, 2021
This is a very old American company. So I tried to buy American--wrong! The apparent quality of these expensive sheets looks like they will compare closely with crap one gets from the Chinese via Penney's--and, the pillow covers have no pockets. At least Penney's has those. If you want to buy American, forget ol' L L Bean! Date of experience: August 9, 2020
I was very impressed with L. L. Bean! I plan to revisit some day, when I'm a bit more flush (with cash, like I was last time I shopped there via catalog). As you might expect from a long-established proud rural Maine company in those days (nearly all the great clothes I bought were made in USA), both design and build yielded some of the best clothes I've ever owned. I feel like a slob compared to how I dressed then, lol. Old Nordstrom comparable. Reliable, prompt... Long ago.
