  • Budget Truck Rental Review

I've rented trucks from Budget Truck every year since 2017, to include earlier this year. However, when I went to pick up a truck for a recent rental, the location had no record of my reservation. I found out later that Budget Truck had changed the location and pick-up date without even telling me! On top of that, they charged me a $75 no-show fee, which they later refunded. Unfortunately, Budget Truck can no longer be relied upon. Service Value
I rented a 12 box truck from budget from California to Utah one way. First they don't tell you online that they charge you for 4 days of insurance, even if you only need it for 1 day and it was half as much as the rental cost. The truck was shaking so bad at 50 MPH. That it was hard to keep it in the lane. I also drove thru a rain storm, and the truck leaked water inside of the cab of the truck soaking me from head to toe. It also ruined my laptop as it got very wet. Customer service was terrible bottom line don't use this company. Tip for consumers:The truck was dangerous to drive Products used:Rental truck Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

I was trying to rent a 26' truck from three different Budget locations in NJ (Bayonne, Lyndhurst and Matawan). The Bayonne one didn't have any trucks EVEN though I placed a reservation in advance. The one in Lyndhurst, where I was sent by the Bayonne employee on the same day, told me I was on a DO-NOT-RENT list. After sending 2 hrs on the phone with budget and after I was already at home in a different state, the company rep told me it was a Budget's mistake and if I still needed a truck, I could go back (drive 1 hr one way) and rent one. Ridiculous! Of course, I didn't return to that pathetic "establishment". In two days, I gave them the last chance and went to their Matawan location. The rusty truck that they had for me was about 20 years old with cracked windshield, bare tires and extremely worn out in general. It is simply dangerous to ride in it. I am now seeking reimbursement for my wasted time and money I spent on workers, who were waiting for me at home to help load the truck. Products used:I was trying to use their Truck Rentals
I was told last minute (less than 24 hours) that I would have to call their service line to find a new truck. I was excited to take advantage of their cheap price- that was not what happened. They charged me initially for the extra mileage & had me go all the way out to Roseville when my move was within Troy. If only they could be more efficient and keep track of their trucks. I was pressured into getting the insurance since I had to go ~50 miles total vs ~15 miles if it would've been available. I wish such a big company wouldn't have taken advantage of their consumer. I will be moving in the future and will not be using this truck rental service again. I advise all against it as well. Tip for consumers:Don't use this service they will nickel & dime you! I reserved a truck a week ago. The night before, they called and said there would not be a truck here for me to use, but to call in the morning. I pushed my moving date to make sure I could get a truck. I called and asked for a manager. No one called. Called again the next day, they said they could not guarantee a truck for two days later after moving my moving date. I don't know what kind of business they are running and are shocked they are still in business. I will never use them again. They didn't seem to care that I canceled my reservation.
I reserved a truck several weeks ago for a college move. Budget sent me a confirmation yesterday. As I was leaving to pick up the truck they called to tell me that they didn't have any trucks. This is completely unacceptable. You should know how many trucks you have and you shouldn't take Reservations for trucks you don't own. Edit: This happened two days later. After they informed me I didn't have the van I'd reserved and cancelled the reservation, their system charged me a $75 no show fee! I then had to spend a half hour on the phone with customer service to have my complaint resolved. Seriously? Service Value Shipping Returns Quality
I reserved a truck 1 month in advance, the day before my move I received an email from budget confirming my truck was ready the following morning. I went to pickup the truck and they had nothing for me. The Budget employee called every Budget rental for 50 miles around and no one had a truck available. I am wondering what is the point of reserving a vehicle if Budget doesn't honor it. Fortunately U-Haul had one I could rent. I would give less than one star but it wasn't an option. I will never use Budget again.
I would give a zero if I could, I rented a 26 foot they canceled the rental and didn't let me know so they ended up giving me two 16 foot trucks and charged me the same amount X two not counting the gas and that was 331$ a piece they said they would give me compensation when the trucks were turned in after being on the phone for 45 min including two disconnects they finally said they would refund 75$ Wow I would never use this truck service again I could have paid just a little more and had someone move me without all the hassle Tip for consumers:That they can cancel your truck at any time mine was rented a month early they said they canceled eight days before use Products used:Two 16 foot moving trucks Service Value Returns Quality
I only rated it one because zero was not an option! I rented truck #******* a couple of weeks ago to move furniture from Illinois to Alabama. It cost me a fortune to rent this truck $1265. I started my trip down I-65, and I noticed the check engine light popped up for a second time. The first time, was when I got the truck and I had a Budget mechanic drive to my house to fix it. This truck had 180k miles on it! Anyways, as I started driving south, I noticed that the suspension was horrible! I was not able to control the vehicle very well when driving around left turns or over bumps. I am guessing there were issues with the struts, ball joints, sway bar links or all of the above. I had to drive 40-45mph just to make sure I did not crash on the highway! It was horrible. I finally made it after a 14 plus hour drive. I am surprised I didn't die from a crash or a heart attack! I returned the truck in Alabama and things did not get much better from there. The service rep was unable to log into the computer and I had to do a bunch of follow-ups just to make sure the truck was returned. I also had to speak to customer service to make sure they knew how dangerous truck #******* was. I told them that this truck should be removed from their fleet immediately because someone was going to die driving it. A customer service rep named Geraldo told me he was going to have the truck serviced - I hoped he did! He also said he was going to reimburse me for my horrible experience... nearly two weeks later... no reimbursement! I will never rent from BUDGET again and I would recommend that you don't either! Worst customer service I've every seen...messed up my move.I hope they go out of business.they use to be good now they are totally incompetent
Rented a truck from Budget. The site worked fine--the company, not so much. Where we rented from was nice enough, though I think I walked back in time to 1952. Loads of insurance add-ons inflate the price. Know what your regular insurance covers before you go in. After signing away my rights, we sauntered to our rent-a-ride. The truck we got was filthy. I mean, the interior was like a coca-cola bomb went off, daily, for about a month. It was so gross I Windexed the interior, seats, steering wheel, windows, etc., before I let my kids sit in it. I went through half a roll of paper towels, and they were just about black with grime, food particles, dirt and other unidentifiable bits. To say it was dirty is an understatement. The outside was also filthy, but who cares? My point is, man, show a little pride of ownership. You'd think a quick wash a cleaning, every month or so would pay off in customer satisfaction. The truck drove well enough. Until you had to sit at a light. Idling, it rumbled, shook, and shimmied. The cacophony was deafening. When we had to stop or slow, my two boys shouted Battlestar Galactica comments, sounding like the robots form the old TV series, and sang Metallica riffs. The noise was so loud, you couldn't hear someone screaming, "Please God, Stop, you are backing over my wife and child", if they were standing next to you, with open windows. So we did our move, didn't kill anyone, and went to take back the truck. Gas stops are always fun. I filled it up as instructed, and the gauge read much higher than when I picked it up. At $4 a gallon that's a little irritating. I managed to turn it around and get it pointed in the right direction. And we were again on our way. When returning the beast, the only way to spot the dealer was by the 8 1/2 x 11 inch sign in the Sears Automotive window. Maybe they could mention that on the return slip. (We are located at Sears). The trucks were out back were only visible once you drove PAST the location. Nothing like a little extra maneuvering in the largest vehicle I have ever driven on a busy road. We pulled in at 4:20, and the staff who closed at 4pm were nowhere to be seen. That was as advertised--so it's not an issue. The guys at Sears (Who were open til 6) told us to just put the keys in their drop box. He directed me to their drop box, which was inside the Sears/Budget location, in a back room, behind the garbage can. Drop, turn, safe and sound. Done, I thought. The next morning, we call the Budget guys, to make sure all was in order. We hang up and get a prompt call back. The heavy accented voice informed me that they did not have a drop box, asking me where his truck was. Several calls later, we explained where his drop box was, where his truck was, and finally our moving experience was complete. While I would use Budget again, I don't think we'd use that location. Has anyone had any bad experiences with the company? What can a consumer do if they rent a truck and it's a dirty relic, like the monster I drove? It seems that as a desperate mover, in a time crunch, we really have little options. Thanks for listening.
This company is complete trash! I get a call from Budget not even a day and a half before we're supposed to move from Minnesota to Wisconsin to tell me that the truck I reserved 2 weeks prior isn't available! What?!? I asked the guy who called me to help me find another truck and he told me to call customer service. Really?! I called customer service and they said all they could do is make a request to the Inventory Manager. Seriously?! The inventory manager named Sergio was beyond unprofessional and insulting and when I asked for his employee number he canceled my reservation without my authorization and pretty much told me to go figure it out. Called numerous times before being connected to a supervisor who justified the actions of the inventory manager! Not one person I spoke to even tried to help me with the issue. I was forced to stop working for the day to look for another truck rental that cost me a lot more because it was a last-minute reservation! Disgusting people that work for Budget. Disgusting customer service! Disgusting company! Products used:n/a Service
I reserved a truck online to pick up at 5 pm for their Ankeny, Iowa location. The day of, Budget Truck informed me that I must go to a different location, 10 miles out of the way, and they would not waive the extra mileage that would count against my trip. I arrived at the new location in Des Moines at 4:55,5 minutes prior to my pick-up time. Upon arrival, no one was there to help me. I tried calling their location's number and Budget Trucks' main help number, and I received no answer for 15 minutes. Once I was finally able to get on the phone with someone, they informed me that I would not be able to get a moving truck for a couple of hours and that I would have to drive to an even further location (that would still count against my mileage). I was forced to find another moving truck (which was basically impossible) for the next day. All in all, we canceled the reservation, but I would never go to this place again. I would never rent from Budget again. On 5-28-2021 we went to pick up our truck and after waiting for almost an hour we were told that the truck was not available so we were directed to go to another location that was 15min away and was closing in 20min. We did pick up a truck only to discover the next day that the box area was leaking due to external damage that had been done by a previous incident. We had a dresser ruined and lost some other minor items that had been already packed into the truck. We had to delay the hired movers who were scheduled to load the truck while we waited for a repair person to come and fix the hole in the roof. We also discovered that the cab of the truck leaked and had a miserable trip from Ohio to Florida in very rainy weather as rain water dripped in down our backs and on our heads. Fortunately when we reloaded the truck we had placed plastic bins in the area of the leak and covered all furniture with tarps because the truck was still leaking inside the box area. The chargers in the truck were all broken so we could not charge our phones for GPS. We found a fork in the truck in the door area so obviously it had not been cleaned. So much for COVID prevention. The truck was old and would shake if you tried to drive over 60mph. Although we paid over $300 for the added insurance and filed a claim we still have not been paid for the lost items. I would never recommend rental from Budget. Some might say you get what you pay for but this wasn't a cheap rental and we at least expected a decent experience. Service Value Quality
Rented a Budget truck Saturday July 24th. From Everett WA to Scottsdale AZ for our cross country move. Transmission blew out on the highway at night. It almost caused a car accident. Thankfully it did not. Pulled on the side of the highway, called roadside assistance. They said they would send a tow truck. Tow truck arrived 4 hrs. Later. Thankfully it was not winter, could have frozen to death. Got the truck towed to a small hotel. Was told that they would provide a new truck hopefully the next day and that they would cover associated costs for food and lodging. Next day was Sunday, called them said they needed a managers approval for a truck replacement and no managers work on Sunday- told to stay until Monday. Asked about towing truck to a car repair shop, they said that wasn't possible-not sure why. It has now been 5 days. Truck is still in parking lot and still stuck in hotel. Have spoken with them daily, multiple times a day. They do not provide a direct contact number or extension- need to wait on hold with them for 45min-an hour to get through each time. Tried calling customer service as well today, asked to speak to a manager and they said they do not allow customers to speak directly to a manager, unless manager contacts them. I asked them to contact a manager on our behalf, they said they sent an email and should receive a response within 24-48hrs. I asked them to call a manger, not email and they said no- they are only able to email internally. I think that was a lie. This entire time stranded- the only thing within walking distance (in 105 degrees) is fast food. Had to spend basically three meals a day at Jack in the Box and Dominos pizza. Finally decided that they were not going to be helpful and looked online for inventory to see what they had in stock at locations within a 200 mile radius. Found a truck in Vancouver WA. Called Budget back again and asked them why they hadn't reserved the truck for us. they said they basically weren't sure and that it may show online but doesn't mean that it is actually available. She said she would email them directly and was unable to call them because they only use email. I figured it would be a long time to get a response and told them to wait on the phone with me while I contact the location on speaker. Before they could respond I contacted the Vancouver location and they told me that the truck was just reserved via email for an emergency breakdown situation in Prosser WA. I asked her why they didn't take care of it and why it took me calling around to find a truck. And her response was that she was unsure because it is a different department that locates a replacement vehicle. I'm hoping that the problem will now be solved. Which would make it 6 days later by tomorrow. Still not sure how to transfer our entire truck full of belongings to the new truck and don't think we should be paying for it. The biggest issue with all of this is that I read all of the reviews on this facebook account and there were hundreds of people with similar stories. Even people stuck in the winter on the side of highway in a broken down truck. There were some that were stuck for multiple days- with kids and pets. One person even had their cat pass away. They also had to fight for money to be reimbursed back to them, even though they were told that all expenses would be covered. For us, there are jobs on the line, personal health, prescriptions and 6 days of lost time. I'm nervous that the expenses will not be reimbursed and the situation will not be resolved again by tomorrow. This company needs to be held accountable- they cannot continue treating people this way with no accountability. Tip for consumers:Stay away and don't use them. They don't deserve to be in business. I rented the truck on Friday 06/09/23 1PM for return on Monday, 6/12/23 1PM. The staff at Dealer #******* (Elmhurst, IL) were great, professional, kind and patient. Even though the truck was beat up (dings, dents) and dirty we inquired and were told it was the 'best' truck they had available. For a Chicago, IL to Huntsville AL (8 hour drive) relocation the truck broke down half way in Elizabethtown, Kentucky at 10:00AM CST. It took a total of five (5) hours of waiting on the side of the interstate for roadside assistance to advise they could not repair (wrench light and Check Engine Light issues) and for the truck to be towed local. Budget insisted we stay at a local hotel until they located a replacement within a 200 mile radius. In hopes they'd find a replacement soon. We did not stay, movers scheduled at our destination would still charge for the POD unload regardless if they provided the service or not. A replacement vehicle was delivered to the home in Huntsville on Sunday 6/11/23 at 7PM, driver did not give us any documentation. This truck had accident vehicle damage in several places, both rear-view mirrors did not lock in place and the charges did not work. On 6/13/23 at 1PM is when the truck was dropped of at the contracted destination in Murfreeboro TN. As of 6/14/*******@12:30PM CST the contract is still open in the system, flagged for being late return since it was originally due on Monday 6/12. I was told today by Customer service we'd be charged an extra day rental for the late return which MAY be reinbursed. As of 6/14/*******@12:30PM CST I was told it may take 24-72 hours to close the contract, which legally leaves me liable for a vehicle that is no longer in my physical possession. We reserved two 26' trucks plus a car trailer on 5/29/2019 with a scheduled pick up day of 6/19/2019. We booked these trucks 3 weeks ahead of time, knowing it was to be a busy time of year for truck rentals. Two days before our scheduled pick-up date, Sean from Budget Truck Operations left me a voicemail stating they were going to cancel our reservations because they were having a problem with trucks in that market! I called him back right away but they had already canceled our reservations without ever speaking to me. I guess he was trying to make me feel better by saying we were not the only people he had to call to cancel their reservation, stating he had a bunch of other people to call with the same news. I told him that didn't make me feel better, it made me feel worse because they didn't just overbook by a couple of trucks, they overbooked by a bunch! He also said our "reservation" did not guarantee us the equipment, it just guaranteed us the price! I told him that is ridicules, what good does a price guarantee do me if they don't have the equipment to rent me? After getting nowhere with Sean, I asked him to have his manager or supervisor call me because this was completely unacceptable. Awhile later someone else with Budget called and told me Sean had been correct in cancelling our reservations, and told me the same things he had told me. I explained this was two days before a big move with moving crews lined up at both ends and canceling on us just two days before the move was putting us in a very difficult position. I asked if they could drive trucks in from another location or have us pick-up from somewhere else? Both of them told me they didn't have a single truck available within 300 or even 400 miles of our rental location. Neither of them offered compensation or assistances of any kind for the predicament they were putting us in. I have rented a lot of trucks and cars in my lifetime and this was by far the worst experience ever, I will never use Budget again! Fortunately for us we were able to scramble and find the equipment we needed with Penske Truck Rental! Penske was fantastic, great equipment, and excellent customer service. I highly recommend them!
I reserved a 16 feet truck and a dolly 3 weeks in advance my move (I paid more for the larger truck just because I needed to tow the car, I actually didn't need such a big truck). The website let me reserve a truck (with a nice 20% discount), and I got an email confirmation. A days before my move I got another email confirming my reservation. The day I was supposed to move I call to ask if I could pick up the truck a couple of hours later and then they told me that they didn´t have a dolly and there wasn't any available. I had to FOUND OUT THE DAY OF MY MOVE that my equipment wasn't available. I called the 800 number, and was told that the system can't guarantee availability! So why did the send TWO CONFIRMATIONS but nobody called in advance nor the day of the move to let me know that the equipment wasn´t available?!?!? They gave us a 5% discount (which equals to $37) for the inconvenience! 5%! And we had to drive the vehicle. DO NOT book Budget Trucks unless you like to play risky games, it is cheaper than Uhaul or Penske but the risk/reward is not worth it. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW IF THE EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE UNTIL THE DAY OF MOVE! Go somewhere else, pay more and sleep well without having to worry about availability. Service Value Quality
