This payment processor is notorious for keeping people's money for 90 to 120 days without explanation or reason. Do not do business here. I just started a new company and on-boarded my startup as I finally got my very 1st customer I worked so hard for. I am developing a software to be delivered to VCs in 45 days. When. The customer payed me to get to work Square deactivated my account immediately to keep the payment. They're excuse is to protect the customer but if that's so then why won't they just allow me to refund the customer. I have never had a previous transaction with Square so there's no bad history. This is just an excuse to retain other peoples hard earned money. This will legit ruin my customers goal to build this software, ruin my reputation and my first client engagement as a founder. They deactivated my account, won't allow me to refund and blocked communication when this is something that is an easy fix. This is very unethical and it is causing a lot of damage to my business and also my clients business. My client and I are missing a lot of opportunities here and looking forward to talking to legal counsel to join the millions of other Square has done this too. Please be safe and do not let any money touch their platform.
Tip for consumers:They deliberately denied the processing of this transaction. The reason why they would deactivate an account has nothing to do with this. They said they wanted to verify my business but did not give me a chance to send the docs before deactivating it over the weekend after the customer paid. They are not protecting the customer because they won't allow me to refund the money. And I do not have negative history with chargebacks and there are no pending transactions so it makes no sense to hold

So let's start class-action (lawsuit)by same situation case.This is just scam.They have to go to jail.

No order cancellations... extremely shady busy and garbage customer service. I was planning on using their services but now I will never use square... horrible business practice

Date of experience: January 20, 2024I have been in business for over 20 years. Usually my clients pay in cash ACH or check. I started doing business with a new client that wanted to pay by credit card. Signed up with Square, the absolute worse decision I have made in business. They took the payments from my customer and then told me that I'm not approved as a merchant. They are holding my payment for 90 days and not refunding me the cost of joining and paying for additional services.
Customer service hung up on me when I asked to speak to a manager.

I just had a representative put me old hold and he came back and said "I can look into this now, sorry I just needed a few minutes!" Chat is even worse, bizarrely people just drop off the chats every few minutes and then a new person picks up.
Tip for consumers:Square is a really expensive option from the percentage they take on fees. The site isn't user friendly, the support isn't well prepared, and the hardware is mediocre.

Getting someone to help you is like pulling teeth with a shoe string. So the portal wouldn't let me delete my account go figure we know what that's about. Intuit QuickBooks did the same thing. Not to mention AT&t they all try to hang on to you. Well after 45 minutes on the phone 15 minutes of texting finally got it deleted horrible horrible customer service square I give you all a zero.

Date of experience: February 7, 2024Although I had eight good years of using Square this past month, a Friday, and a Saturday of retail sales in December before Christmas, most of my debits disappeared. Between 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock on a Friday and on a Saturday in December all my transactions went through the processing system perfectly and never came to my account nor appeared on my dashboard after over 20 hours of trying to get a hold of a supervisor I would only be coming connected to lower level people that would either hang up or transfer my call and they would hang up and I could never get a solution. I lost over $350 in sales. The people on the helpdesk told me I had to take peoples phone numbers and credit card numbers so that they could get back to them and be sure their bank took out the money before they could ever help me. Use another credit card system processor if you want your money.
Tip for consumers:If they did not have such an irritating customer service support system in place it may be a good system. Something technical happened and I could not get anybody to connect me with anybody that could help. I think that either somebody was crooked and they take money once in a while from a business or there were some technical error that nobody would even bother trying to clear up.

Date of experience: February 24, 2024I changed my merchant bank account several months ago and have not been able to get the new account registered with Square. You cannot speak to a customer service representative by phone, they text you and expect you to sit for hours texting with them. When I requested speaking with someone in person the texts get really snarky and they absolutely refuse to let you speak with someone. Their automated phone system has NO option to speak by phone. I will be finding a new service as soon as I get my money from these clowns that they are holding.

Date of experience: December 20, 2023I had a Tenant signed a lease agreement for 12 months my tenant received reoccurring statements every month once rent is due. If square actually took the time to look she's been paying so all of a sudden it was a mistake. Well she paid her rent late and then disputed it saying that she has no regulation of the transaction with that being said she was able to get her rent money back through Square. ( they fell for the scam) and clearly this is something that the tenant do is dispute transactions after they received services so if you are a landlord, you may not want to use square they favored in the card holders favor me the landlord without rent, knowing that she has abandoned my property. I have damages and text messages as well as the lease that I was able to prove to square that she was a tenant, and they still agreed in her favor. I am not happy with please do not do business with them to save your sanity.

As countless others have indicated, they will hold your business funds without notice and completely deactivate your account without reason. A business cannot survive with such practices. My customers money is being held for 90 days currently.

Date of experience: April 18, 2024Sudden interruption of funds confirmed. First sale on my website & they halted all my brick and mortar business transfers to "verify" my account. Asked to perform tasks that are literally impossible. (I have NO Delivery!) Online customer service useless. They only tell you to call in & wait for hours. Haven't fixed it days later. Data glitches, expensive equipment. And never link your Etsy. Etsy will take a cut of EVERY transaction on Square, no matter if it's an Etsy sale or not. GO WITH YOUR BANK, no matter how much more it costs! Square is not worth the hassle. I deeply regret this choice.
Tip for consumers:Don't link your Etsy! Every single transaction on Square will give Etsy a cut, no matter how small, or how unrelated to Etsy it is. They haven't fixed this "glitch" in years, and don't inform you of it.
Products used:Square readers, Hub, terminal, all stupidly overpriced. You will eventually have to invest thousands to use their system properly. It's not worth it.

They hold your money until they see fit to give you the money You worked hard for. Go figure. I will never use them again as soon as I get my deposit (hopefully this century) im closing my account and going back to Chime. How dare these scummy companies tell us if and when we get Our hard earned money! I should have read the reviews first 95% are bad. And customer service are rude and read off of scripts you get no real resolution. I feel a class action lawsuit brewing.

They say I don't know instead of finding out what's wrong and will completely end the chat while you're still asking questions.
They are the rudest company we have ever worked with. If you haven't signed up with them, I would suggest finding another route. Someone who has actually been trained on how to help others and help businesses. I'm beginning to wonder if Square is a shell company.
Ps I have used square for years and this year is the absolute worst. They have never been so outright rude and disrespectful. One of our businesses is photography the other is cleaning.

Date of experience: April 24, 2023A deposit error happened to the wrong bank account and the customer service just hung up on me when i tried to get help called back to speak to a supervisor they would not transfer me then i started swearing after asking 5 times to pass me to the supervisor then he told me he would hang up if i continued swearing i told him i asked 5 times without swearing and you still did not do it so i accentuated my swearing 100% then he threatened to block my number thtas what those fkn idiots do when your money is lost. I can't tell how many times a simple phone call for support turned into a headache of repetitive times saying one's email name phone and so on. Not even getting to the problem or less likely getting an solution. Ridiculous Square. Stop using and outsourcing out of country to people who barley speak and understand the language let alone can here us talking. So frustrating to use a company that is riddled with software challenges —as a business owner I've about had it!

Then, one day, they decided to hold over $4,000 in payments being processed. They then proceeded to deactivate our account for absolutely no reason, citing that, per their General Terms of Service, they can drop us at any time for any or no reason. I called several times, had a couple of ongoing email threads. NOTHING. No reason given, zero support provided. This company does NOT have their customer's best interests at heart and openly preys on small businesses who can't fight back.
Tip for consumers:DON'T. DO. NOT. USE. Square. They're a hook & delete scam company dooming their customers to pain and frustration.

Date of experience: January 13, 2022Have been utilizing square for my business as a licensed cosmetologist since 2011 without issues except for unexpected fees. However Friday 6/24/22 after finishing a few clients, I needed to transfer money over to my bank account and was told my account is "under review" for suspicious activity. I called and was unable to get any resolve. They have no fraud department so I'm not even sure who is "investigating my account". I asked to speak with a manager, was told one would return my call by end of business day Friday. It's now Monday 6/27/22, I'm still unable to withdraw money or get any customer service from the company. My business funds are on hold without reason. Was given a hold time of 24 hours and we are well past that. I have not had any charge backs, refunds, etc that would initiate a review. The lack of warning, explanation, compassion or integrity during a time that is already hard on business owners is unacceptable.
Tip for consumers:Stay away find another company because this one will hold your money. They also have no real customer service or upper management that they allow paying consumers to speak with

Realizing that they Have No Clue of what they are doing, I was finally able to reach the last representative. He was actually able to help us out and it was only 2 steps to achieve what we had been trying to get through for weeks. I am upset with myself that I didn't get the last representatives name, so I could sing his praises. You guys need to hire people who understand your Square Up systems and don't have you doing things that are unnecessary.

With the account being in that state, you have ZERO possibilities to talk to any of their clowns in the organization and all you get via e-mail is the canned e-mails that their untrained monkeys are allowed to send.
I look at them as a bunch of scammers and would rather take pennies as payment from my customers than dealing with these shady figures again.
Date of experience: September 3, 2017I have used Square without incident for over 8 years. Last 30 days has been a nightmare. Everything I have read on these reviews I have experienced. Verified funds withheld without valid reason or availability to discuss with reps. We have been ignored or plain ol lied to concerning "Held Funds"
We sold a service using Afterpay, and the next day Square took the Afterpay funds out of my account claiming they were protecting me. 2 days later, the transaction from Square TAKING MY MONEY, was still showing and a Rep claimed that it was credited back to me and "I spent it". There is no evidence of a credit in the amount that they debited. And no one at square gives a $#*! about explaining where the money is or why there are NO TRANSACTIONS TO SHOW THE MONEY WAS RETURNED OR SPENT. It has been almost 30 days and still no accruing or support from Square Inc
