1)They do NOT have on-shore customer service. I'm hearing impaired (not deaf) and it was a nightmare talking to someone who did not speak English phonetically correct and with a very heavy accent. 2) I returned the car early and they will NOT credit me for 1/3 (2 days) of my rental because I used a 3rd party to get the reservation, yet I paid Dollar directly. How the &*^$# does that work? 3) You CANNOT talk to a human being without trying several times with their ridiculous phone tree. Clearly they want you to do everything via the website. As far as I'm concerned, Dollar is a JOKE! Absolutely horrible service--all they are focused on is the almighty DOLLAR! Tip for consumers:Dollar openly discriminates against hearing impaired and have absolutely no services to help impaired people. The attitude of off-shore CSRs is disgusting. They talk fast and accuse you of interrupting when you ask them to repeat specific words for clarification. They do not and likely cannot speak English phonetically correctly. Sad that open discrimination is allowed at this point in time. Products used:Rented a car, returned early, not credit for returning with 1/3 time remaining on rental. I recently rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Buffalo Niagara International Airport and was hit with an undisclosed $139.95 fee from PlatePass after the rental period ended. Unfortunately, this experience has left me deeply disappointed with both companies, and I want to warn others about their unethical practices. When my wife and I picked up the car, the EZ-Pass transponder was already open and active, and we were given no information at the rental desk about optional toll services like PlatePass. As tourists from a city without toll roads, we reasonably assumed the transponder was part of the service. At no point were we informed that using the transponder would automatically enroll us in a $139.95 PlatePass All-Inclusive package. After returning home, Dollar and PlatePass attempted to charge my credit card, but the transaction was flagged as potential fraud. When I contacted them, they acknowledged that the fees were not clearly explained at pickup and offered only a partial fee reduction—still expecting me to pay administrative charges I never knowingly opted into. The transponder was pre-activated when we got in the vehicle. We never had a chance to opt in or out. Even if the terms were buried in a lengthy rental contract, it is unreasonable to expect customers to comb through fine print for such critical information. It is clear that Dollar and PlatePass use this hidden-fee tactic to generate revenue at the expense of unsuspecting customers. If you are planning to rent from Dollar or any company partnered with PlatePass, be extremely careful—check the transponder before driving off and ask detailed questions about their toll policy. I hope Dollar and PlatePass address this deceptive practice. But as it stands, I will not be using their services again and strongly recommend renters consider other options to avoid similar issues. To be clear, Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz are all owned by the same company. In 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, and their partner PlatePass over allegations of undisclosed and misleading toll-related fees. Customers reported being charged excessive administrative fees without proper disclosure, and some were enrolled in toll programs without their knowledge or consent. The legal proceedings culminated in settlements between 2014 and 2019. Hertz agreed to an $11 million settlement to address complaints that it had charged customers without sufficient notice about the PlatePass fees. Dollar and Thrifty faced similar legal challenges. These cases highlight a pattern of complaints about the lack of transparency in toll-related programs offered by the Hertz Corporation. Be warned. Better yet, choose another rental company. I booked on rentalcars.com with Dollar. It showed that I had to pay the rental fee at time of booking, and then pay for the taxes and fees at the rental counter. It was to be $95 more. I paid it at time of pickup. When I got home a week later I found another $76 charge on my credit card for taxes and fees. I have tried to work with them and my credit card company but no help from Dollar at all. Be careful not to get ripped off by Dollar or their parent company Hertz. Tip for consumers:No way to call and speak to anyone. All complaints are handled via Web. Products used:Car rental Service Value Returns Quality Date of experience: April 10, 2024
Worst rental experience ever. Waited 2 hours to pick up a car I had reserved at the Chicago airport. All the other rental companies seemed to manage the volume fine, but Dollar was completely understaffed for their reservations. Do not use this company. I had prepaid for a reservation, but had to cancel several days in advance due to COVID. Since there was a problem with the credit card we used I tried several times to contact customer service to cancel, but they never replied. According to their policy, if the rental is cancelled more than 24 hours ahead of time, they will refund all but $100. But they've totally ignored our requests, and since the deadline is now past they won't refund anything. So now we're out $224. Tip for consumers:Worst customer service! I had an incredibly frustrating experience with Dollar Rent A Car. Their customer service was abysmal, and I was left completely in the dark about the charges. You still receive a charge for the car even after you return it to them without any explanation or communication about how the charge came about. The staff members I encountered were rude and unprofessional, adding to my dissatisfaction. To make matters worse, the waiting times for both picking up and returning the car were unreasonably long. It was a highly inconvenient and disappointing experience. Don't even think about renting from them. Service Value Quality Date of experience: July 14, 2023
Terrible service in Las Vegas on September 5th, 2023! Impossible to pick up a car on time, 30 people were staying in line... Desk staff rude and angry with customer despite their failure to provide car at promised time. NEVER AGAIN! Date of experience: September 5, 2023
I used Dollar at the palm springs airport for two different cars. I returned both vehicles full of gas. They charged me for a full tank. I did not accept their offer to fill the tank when I signed the contract originally. Agent approved the condition of the car saying everything is fine but he didn't have time to print receipt. Do not listen to agent on returning the car but insist that you get your receipt. After I complained to headquarters they have done nothing to return my money. Got scammed by thrifty just a month earlier. When I trusted the agent at the counter. Both thrifty and dollar are owed by Hertz. Beware! Date of experience: April 5, 2023
8/30/2023 I reserved a car for 10/16/2023 with total cost of $60.08 and prepaid $43.15 on a crdit card, knowing $16.93 would be due on 10/16/2023. At NO TIME during the ATL Airport pickup did I ask for or authorize a Vehicle Upgrade or extra insurance coverage. Before returning the car, I refilled the gas tank at a station less than 3 miles from Atlanta airport. 10/16/2023 Dollar charged an EXTRA $78.74 to my credit card. I communicated by displeasure to a Dollar agent online. Only response I got was a copy of a bill showing extra $78,74 charges for upgrade & insurance. CONSUMERS BEWARE! I will NEVER rent from Dollar ever again. FYI, Hertz owns Dollar. Products used:1 day car rental Service Value Date of experience: October 19, 2023
No stars. Quite simply rented a car from Dollar Rental Car for $144. Paid in full. They hid an intercity extra charge of $212 somewhere upon the cars return in the contract you never read at the counter because you fully paid for it. There should be a way to boycott Dollar and their parent company Hertz. Being dishonest will not pay in the long run. Date of experience: February 23, 2021
Ft Lauderdale FL on line with about 200 other people and there are only 3 counter clerks working. Asked for a manger and they said they are all outside cleaning cars! My pickup was for 12 noon still standing in line with about 75 people ahead of me! Unacceptable Date of experience: August 21, 2021
When we went to pick up the car we were told a lot of dishonest information about tolls and gas prices. They overcharged us. The company would not remove the charges. Save your money and go somewhere else. Dollar Cars is no good. Date of experience: May 10, 2019
I will never rent from them again. Went through Dollar.com and booked. When I tried to cancel three weeks in advance, Dollar could not tell me who I could contact to get my refund. They finally sent me a reminder for the reservation with a totally different confirmation number but wanted $55 dollars to cancel. I thing Dave Ramsey should cancel his endorsement (if he really even endorses them). Buyer beware! Date of experience: November 19, 2019
They charged us for an extra driver and didn't disclose. Told us we should have opened and Read the contract that some man had his hands all over. No thank you it's a pandemic. No one will call you back or work with you. NEVER rent from them. Date of experience: November 19, 2020
Money hungry company bad experience. Force to buy car ins did not accepted the one from the internet. Now charging 35 $$ for 5 $$$ toll when I should off have the toll pass. Rip off will not rent again in Texas or any other state. Date of experience: August 3, 2019
Business Owner, easy going. Currently working 200 + miles from MSP. Need to extend my rental for 4 days and fly out of MSP. Called they are telling me I cant and that I need to bring the car in and trade it out. Closest return spot is 350 miles away. This makes it a 700 mile trip. Asked to speak with manager 45 minute wait no help, called back same scenario. Your online rental terms specify the cost for extending rentals. You tell me I can't because you gave me a car with registration that is lapsing. Tip for consumers:Choose anyone but hertz/dollar. This experience just ruined my business with them. Do not rent from Dollar. The counter associate basically lied about how the fuel package worked, saying they just top your tank off for 3.19/gallon and put your card on hold to pay for it. I returned my car with a full tank and they charged me a full tank of gas plus an additional 12 bucks in taxes and fees. Basically, they lie about how it works so they can steal your money. Maybe they get a kickback for every fuel package they sell? The customer service representative on the phone was unhelpful and refused to do anything. So my not so inexpensive rental ended up costing me 50 bucks more. Use a company with honest business practices. Products used:Rental car Service Value Date of experience: November 24, 2021
I book the car through Priceline, and they charged me $115 dollars in advance to my trip. When I reached at airport dollar front desk to pick up the car, the lady at front desk said this electric car, you want to go for upgrade and I said Yes, then she upgraded car and again gave me a new amount price $223.27, when I told to her that I have already paid $115 online and take off that amount from $223, she did not replied to me properly and more over she is very careless answers when I ask any question. I was very disappointed and walk away because I am not intending fight with her for car rentals. I thought they might be charged $223 - $115 = $108, But I am seeing both charges on my credit card now. So, just for Sedan car for 3 days rental, it ended up charged from me $339.24. This is something not right. Usually, I go with other rentals for some reason, but this is first time I go with Dollar Car rentals, and had a worst experience. I never come back again if I am going to fall in trap like this by overcharging from customers by misleading from front desk person Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: September 12, 2023
I've used a wide range of mainstream car rentals, and find that Dollar most of the time has the best pricing. In places like Las Vegas the wait line can take a long time; fortunately I have Dollar Express so I can go to the outside kiosk and get my rental there. Never had a problem with their cars. Cust svc has been satisfactory. Date of experience: May 31, 2018
Do not use dollar rental company! This company will charge you for any change that you make your reservation, even if it change benefits of them. In addition, I had a flat tire on the road and they wanted to charge me for that, even though there was no reason for the flat tire other than I was changing a lane. They said they gave me a good car, but that cannot be the case if I just got a flat tire just driving the vehicle. When you call for the company to help, you will sit on the phone for hours, waiting to talk to someone. It was just a terrible experience all around! Dollar is a ridiculous, parasitic company that will try its hardest to lower the cost of the day-to-day rental only to prey upon you with a mountain of hidden fees. I I booked through rentalcars.com and had to pay for insurance twice. Apparently the insurance through the website isn't valid. The amount of hidden fees they hit me with at the pick-up desk more than doubled the amount they gave me on their website. Their staff makes a glacier look like a cheetah, and their phone help is utterly incompetent. Between Dollar and being slowly roasted to the death at the DMV, I'd pick the DMV because it'd be over quicker. Skip this wretched company in lieu of one where you at least KNOW how much they are trying to screw you. Dollar's the type of company to molest you in an alley and then charge you for the jollies. I give Dollar one star only because there is nothing lower. Rented out of Seattle over Christmas 2019 to share time with my family on San Juan Island. Not long after arriving on SJI, the vehicle developed engine issues. Dollar was responsive and tried troubleshooting, but no luck. They then towed a replacement vehicle to SJI! We were so grateful and on the verge of becoming loyal Dollar customers. That is until the letter came. Their claims department said I was responsible for "rodent" damage to the tune of $1800., $178 of which was for repairs to wiring and the rest for towing. I argued and argued with them and their letters got nastier and nastier, so I eventually paid, along with some choice suggestions as to what Dollar could do with itself. Don't rent from Dollar out of Seattle, whatever you do. It is considered one of the most rat infested cities in America. I've wondered how many other customers have had to pay up for similar damages. Rented a car from Dollar at the Phoenix airport. Returned in the way I got it. Just received a $250 bill for unspecified "damages". They neglected to describe what the damages were--all they did was send a bill. I've rented dozens of cars and never received a bill for damages. I expect that if I ever did receive such a bill for damages it would include a detailed report of the damage and proof that the damage occurred during the period of my rental. Even if I successfully appeal the damage charges it will have been a waste of enough of my time to make it never worth renting with Dollar again. Update: I was able to resolve the dispute but it took me about an hour. I switched my rating from 1 star to 2 stars. Date of experience: May 19, 2012
Rented from dollar at JFK recently. First, they had no cars in the stalls they specified on my paperwork. I had to yell for a guy in the lot to come help me because everyone pretended I didn't exit. I finally got him to come over and he offered me a minivan which I was not interested in. He went into the booth and made a phone call which took what seemed like forever, while I stood outside with my luggage in 30 degree weather. Finally, they drove up a car that was filthy. It must have just been turned in and they filled the tank and handed it off to me. Unfortunately, I did not have time to waste due to me needing to be somewhere at a specific time. I suppose because it was an $8.00 rental for the day I should have known what to expect, next time I'll pay a little more with a different company. Date of experience: January 30, 2015
